300 smallholder farmers in one bag.
The Abebe Mulugeta producer group was established in April 2020 at the Gerbota station in Yirgacheffe. Today, it’s home to around 300 smallholder farmers, each caring for plots averaging just 1.5 hectares. These may be small farms, but at 2,100–2,150 meters they’re perfectly placed for producing sweet, dense cherries. With most of the work done by hand and by family, there’s an incredible level of care in every step - from selective picking to delivering only the ripest red cherry to the station.
Once delivered, the cherries are laid out on raised beds where they’re raked, turned, and fussed over daily - a slow but rewarding ritual that takes 12–17 days depending on the weather.
Ethiopian coffee is prized for many reasons, but what makes Yirgacheffe so unique is the combination of genetic diversity, time-honoured traditions, and meticulous processing which has brought us the delicious coffee we enjoy today, with notes of lime, stonefruit, and butterscotch.
