Freezus FAQ's

We know you might have some questions about Freezus which is why we've put together these FAQ's. If you have any further questions, please email us at [email protected].

Why freeze coffee?

Freezing coffee slows down the ageing process and preserves its freshness and all the exciting characteristics and flavours you love. It allows you to store a coffee that you love for a long period of time and brew it when the time is right.

What coffees should I freeze?

You should freeze coffees that you really enjoy and want to drink more of in the future, just like a nice bottle of wine, serve it on those special occasions with the right company, with some friends or if you want to spoil yourself. The pre-freezing process can be time consuming, but enjoyable which is why we usually only freeze really nice coffee or our favourites. Make sure that your coffee is not too fresh or too old when you freeze it. We would recommend freezing coffee that is between 7 and 14 days post roasting. Coffee can be frozen for both espresso and filter.

How do I freeze coffee?

Weigh your usual individual dose for a coffee into a channel bag and vacuum seal it using a vacuum sealer. Put it straight into the freezer at -16/-20 degrees. See our IGTV video on “How to Freeze coffee” for a visual reference.

Why not freezing in a whole bag?

Oxygen accelerates the ageing process in coffee, which is why before freezing you want to remove all the oxygen in the bag to preserve the coffee’s freshness as long as possible.

How long can I keep coffee in my freezer?

Months or even years! As long as your freezer is at the right temperature and there is no oxygen in the bag. We have experienced coffee over 2 years old and still tasting amazing.

Can I “defrost” coffee and put it back into the freezer?

You can, but I’m afraid this is where our expertise runs out. We have not had much experience freezing thawing and re-freezing so we would recommend using the coffee asap once out of the freezer, but if you do please let us know.

How do I brew frozen coffee?

Take an individual dose out of your freezer, open it and grind straight away. Grinding frozen coffee helps produce a better quality grind helping with our overall extraction. Brew it right away, you do not need to wait until the coffee has gone back to room temperature. Espresso may require a slight grind adjustment, a touch finer than what you normally do is where we recommend due to the grind quality increasing.

Will frozen coffee damage my grinder?

Coffee coming out of the freezer will not damage the burrs of your electric grinder or hand grinder.

Are the Freezus bags recyclable?

They are soft plastic recyclable which means they need to be collated and dropped off at your nearest soft plastic recycle station.

Will you be offering more products like this?

We believe that “Frozen coffee” is here to stay. Freezing opens a ton of possibilities for us, from coffee selection each day, to the life cycle of coffee to how we serve and store our coffee. Therefore, we will regularly have a Freezus coffee in our monthly line-up moving forward.
